Linear Laser Diode Driver

Linear Laser Diode Driver

The linear laser diode driver is a constant current source that stabilizes the current through the laser diodes.

Powering the laser diodes requires a DC power supply that accounts for both the laser diode voltage and the voltage drop across the driver. A stable 12 V DC supply is needed to power the driver board.

The driver is controlled via an analog interface, which includes:

  • driver enable/start
  • current setting and modulation
  • overcurrent protection status

The current value is adjusted using a potentiometer. A galvanically isolated current sensor is powered by a 3.3 V DC supply.

The driver features overcurrent protection and reverse current protection. The overcurrent protection ensures that the laser diodes operate within their safe current range. The threshold current is adjustable via a potentiometer. A reverse diode protects the laser diodes from reverse current.

The driver dissipates up to 82 W of thermal power. The driver heatsink must be mounted onto a heat-dissipating surface using thermal paste to ensure proper operation.
